The Marion Dufresne is a research vessel maintained by the
IPEV and
TAAF,
and named in honour of the French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne.
Designed as a multi-purpose research and resupply ship, she was launched
in 1995. The Marion Dufresne is designed to withstand rough seas. She is
equipped with a device which allows her to retrieve sediments on the seafloor
down to 60 m deep, and a multi-beam sonar for cartography. She is also fitted
with an operating theatre.
She supplies 4 times a year the French research stations Alfred Faure (Crozet
Islands), Port aux Francais (Kerguelen Islands) and Martin de Vivies (Amsterdam
Island).
