OX3MC active from Thule Air Base
/ Greenland
Thule Air Base was established in the 50’s. The USA needed a place, close to the North Pole to have bombers ready, in case of an attack from the former Soviet Union, or maybe start an attack ? Anyway, in these days approximately 50.000 US troops landed in the Thule area and build the base. The BMEWS radar was installed here, a "Over the horizon RADAR" looking over the North Pole.
Today the BMEWS are upgraded and are also used for tracking space objects, satellites etc.
My job, up here, is to maintain RADAR, RADIO, NAVAIDS and Weather equipment for use at the airport. We also do inspections/maintaining some scientific equipment (Cosmic Ray monitors, Magnetometers, Riometers, Danish Meteorological Institute, etc.) I am normally up here 2 – 3 months at the time, then 4 – 6 weeks of vacation back in Denmark. When home I like to travel in Europe.
In my spare time I like working HF Phone. I have a Yaesu FT1000 MK 5, Ameritron AL 80 B linear, normally tuned for 800 W. I am so lucky, I can use an Inverted HF cone antenna for operations. Located on "South Mountain" here at Thule It was former used by The USAF for Air Traffic Control. From my private room, I can work from a Yaesu FT897 D and my FD 4 Windom antenna.
Propagation from here is very dependant on aurora activity. We are inside the aurora circle, when aurora is high it makes operation, specially on the lower bands, impossible. But I have worked VK and ZL stations from here on 80 and 40 meters under good conditions.
