Pedro Vicente Maldonado station was established on Greenwich island, South Shetland archipelago in 1990. The station opens every year during the summer season only.

INAE polar institute is in charge of several scientific programs studying in particular krill and plankton but also biology, hydrography, climatology and medicine.
